REVIEW: Scream Queen - 1

Biff Bam Pow Comics | June 19, 2008 | 11:40 pm

Ok - so, I think it’s fair to say that I like to give new things a try. I’ve challenged myself to find a new web comic each and every Wednesday, and I’ve picked up more first issues, specials and one-shots than I’d care to mention.

So with this in mind, I saw Mat Santolouco’s cover (a) for Scream Queen, and decided to give the new Boom Studios book a go, knowing absolutely nothing about it.

Sadly, it wasn’t quite what I was hoping for.

***SPOILER ALERT***

Scream Queen is a little hard to sum up without ruining the premise too much - so think Jason Vorhees in a mall after dark, murdering not young copulating couples, but rather the… Untidy.

Now - this idea, although not terribly original, is enough to bring a broad smile to my face.

I’m a big fan of Bruce Campbell movies, B-movies and good trash films in general, so I felt right at home with the premise. I also ‘clicked’ with Brendan Hay’s style of writing pretty much right off the bat.

But I wasn’t however wowed by Nate Watson’s artwork on the book. Although Nate’s work was perfectly competent, his style just didn’t seem to match the material quite as well as you’d hope it would, which left me itching for some nice highly detailed Juan Jose Ryp splash pages instead.

And having said this - although it might seem like I’m jumping on Nate a little by highlighting it - this is the main reason why I won’t be picking up issue two. Brendan’s great script is screaming out for more detailed artwork, or better still - a straight to dvd movie.

Pete’s Score: 3 out of 5
(I’ll happily pick up a discounted trade in the future, but for the moment [as cash is tight], this is my first and last issue of Scream Queen - it is however worth having a look in store and deciding for yourself)
