REVIEW: Fire and Brimstone - 1

Biff Bam Pow Comics | July 4, 2008 | 10:00 pm

So I picked up Richard Moore’s Fire and Brimstone at the comic book store, because the front cover made a good impression, and I felt like giving something a little different a shot.

***SPOILER ALERT***

In Richard’s own words, “Fire and Brimstone is a balls-out action/comedy about a couple’a chicks - one a demoness, one an angel - who screwed up big a looooong time ago and accidentally let loose a horde of demons and rouge angels upon the world. Their punishment ever since has been to track down and haul in every one of those escapees, most of whom will do anything to avoid going back. And just to make it interesting, the girls are mortal while on Earth.”

Now, if you read that and are thinking “sounds pretty good”, then you’re thinking along the same lines I was. This is going to be fun.

But sadly, it isn’t as much fun as it seems. Richard’s artwork is wonderfully stylistic, and you can’t help but enjoy some of his more intricate splash pages (especially the elevator decent to hell), but when it comes to the script…

Well - fun is somewhat lacking. There are a few nice points (such as the opening bar sequence), and the book is certainly worth a look, but I’m not certain it’ll be around all that long unless Richard works on improving the dynamic between Fire and Brimstone (something that really should have hit the mark from the word go).

Pete’s Score: 3 out of 5
(an average book - but worth skimming through at the comics store)

[...] I picked this book up, I was expecting it to be much like Fire and Brimstone issue one. A good cover (from Mukesh Singh), but lacking in substance. How wrong was I. The cover completely [...]
